I use to lay awake at night wondering how I could induce sleep! Honestly; I did, it was no joke.
In fact I got to the stage where I really didn’t look forward to the end of the day as I knew that that was when the battle would begin.
So I set to and made it my mission to discover ways to help me get some decent shut-eye.
I’ve tried all of the following to varying degrees of success. The last one is the remedy I’ve stayed with as it works the best for me, but we’re all different so try them all & see what works best for you. I hope you discover 1 that does.
1. Instigate a bedtime routine- such as always going to bed at the same time (even if you don’t feel sleepy). Remember it takes 2 weeks for a behaviour pattern to become a habit so don’t give up after a few nights if nothing seems to be happening any differently.
2. Old fashioned, I know, but it can work. Always have a warm milky drink before you go to bed. This is scientifically proven to help induce sleep.
3. Pay attention to where you sleep. Is it too light for you even with curtains drawn? Consider buying curtains or blinds with a ‘blackout’ fabric as a lining. They are easily available, not too expensive and are fantastic to use if you’re a shift worker & have to sleep during the day.
4. Try not to eat anything after 8pm at night. This means that your body won’t be digesting (and therefore working) during the night when you’re trying to sleep. It’s just 1 less thing for your body to cope with.
5. Try & relax. Easier said than done, I know. Try to have some SSS ( silence,solitary,stillness) time to yourself. During anytime of the day would be helpful, but especially at night just before you want to get to sleep.
6. If necessary, decide to sleep in the spare room (if you have one) if you normally sleep with a partner. Sometimes the stress of thinking you’re keeping someone else awake because you can’t sleep acts as a vicious circle and just gets you more stressed out.
7. Try some over the counter herbal/natural remedies. If they don’t work for you at least they won’t have had any unpleasant side effects & you can stop taking them instantly. You don’t have to wean yourself off them. ( Remember to try them for at least 2 weeks though)
8. Try; if possible, to sleep when you feel tired- even if it seems unsociable. At least sleep when you can & then try some of the above ideas once you’re not so fractious.
9. Try holistic treatments such as reflexology, Acupuncture or massage. These work on the mind, body & spirit and may very well get to the root of the problem without needless medication.
10. Last but not least & my favourite. Use binaural beats to lower your brain frequencies in minutes to instil quick & healthy sleep patterns. Basically they are low delta frequencies; totally harmless, just relaxing and natural (your brain already produces them!) Your brain is directly responsible for sleep & it’s when there’s too much inner chatter and busyness going on that sleep seems unobtainable. We just don’t switch off. Listening to these frequencies has been a life-saver for me & they’ve given me my life back as I can now function again & no longer have to worry about how to induce sleep.

The most common kind of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Sleep apnea means “cessation of breath.” It is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. In other words, the airway becomes obstructed at several possible sites. The upper airway can be obstructed by excess tissue in the airway, large tonsils, and a large tongue and usually includes the airway muscles relaxing and collapsing when asleep. Another site of obstruction can be the nasal passages.
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by a reduction or cessation (pause of breathing, airflow) during sleep. It is common among adults but rare among children. There are two types of sleep apnea, the more common obstructive sleep apnea and the less common central sleep apnea, both of which will be described later in this article.
Behavioral changes
Behavioral changes are an important part of the treatment program, and in mild cases behavioral therapy may be all that is needed. The individual should avoid the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sleeping pills, which make the airway more likely to collapse during sleep and prolong the apneic periods. Overweight persons can benefit from losing weight. Even a 10 percent weight loss can reduce the number of apneic events for most patients. In some patients with mild sleep apnea, breathing pauses occur only when they sleep on their backs. In such cases, using pillows and other devices that help them sleep in a side position is often helpful.
Weight loss
Sleep apnea can be weight-related. Additional fat around the neck may make the airway narrower, making obstructions more likely to occur. For some overweight people, especially those with mild cases, losing weight can be an effective treatment. Or weight loss may reduce the severity of the sleep apnea. However, it may be hard to lose weight when you have untreated sleep apnea: you may be too tired to exercise and you may eat to stay awake. Also, it may take some time before the weight loss is achieved, so in light of the potential consequences of untreated OSA, using another treatment option while working towards the weight loss goal may be an option.
Pressure requirements
The optimal pressure to use in CPAP therapy is determined in a sleep laboratory study, during which the degree of apnea is monitored with various mask adjustments and increasing levels of air pressure. Pressures are measured in centimeters of water and can vary from 3 to 20 cm, with most patients requiring 6 to 12 cm of pressure to reduce their respiratory disturbance index to fewer than 10 events per hour. People who experience sleep apnea only when they sleep on their backs can benefit from special pillows or folk remedies that encourage side-sleeping, such as the “tennis ball trick” (putting a tennis ball under you to make back-sleeping uncomfortable).
Pulse oximetry
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method which allows health care providers to monitor the oxygenation of a patient’s blood. A sensor is placed on a relatively thin part of the patient’s anatomy, usually a fingertip or earlobe, and red and infrared light is passed from one side to the other. Based upon the ratio of absorption of the red and infrared light caused by the difference in color between oxygen-bound (red) and unbound (blue) hemoglobin in the capillary bed, an approximation of oxygena.
Oral appliances
Another option is wearing an oral appliance designed to keep your throat open. CPAP is more effective than oral appliances, but oral appliances may be easier for you to use. Some are designed to open your throat by bringing your jaw forward, which can sometimes relieve snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea.

Both can trigger the development of unstable breathing that can cause snoring. Irregular sleeping can also cause respiratory instability that result to unstable breathing during sleep.

Here are some true stories about sleep apnea side effects.
In 1959, a disc jockey named Peter Tripp went without sleep for 200 hours to raise money for the March of Dimes. After about five days without sleep, he began to experience hallucinations-believing that somebody’s tweed suit was made of worms and that flames were coming out of a drawer. He managed to do his daytime broadcast, but felt that he was in danger at night. After 200 hours of sleeplessness, he slept for 13 hours and felt much better. After a few nights of extended sleep, he was essentially back to normal, except that he reported slight feelings of depression for several months.
In 1964, Randy Gardner, a 17-year-old high-school senior, tried to establish a new record of 260 sleepless hours as a project in his local science fair. He became irritable after about the fourth day, but he retained many skills-after 230 hours of sleep loss, he still was able to hold his own on a pinball machine with sleep researcher Dr. William Dement, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Stanford University.
Several laboratory experiments have involved sleep deprivation for long periods and the sleep apnea side effects. It was found that a person’s mood deteriorates first-joy disappears-and the person becomes very sleepy and grim. After about two or three days, most people start having minisleeps, little lapses of attention when the brain goes to sleep for only five or ten seconds and wakes right up again. By about five days, these minisleeps become longer and more numerous. By ten or eleven days, the minisleeps are so numerous and so mixed with wakefulness that you can’t tell whether you are awake or asleep. You can talk, and in the middle of talking have two or three slow waves of sleep. You can walk, and from one 5tep to the next you might catch a second of sleep.
If you are given a task to do yourself, such as adding a column of numbers, the minisleeps may occur without your being aware of them.
However, if you are given a paced task-for example, if someone calls out numbers to you that you have to add-you may make many mistakes, because for the few seconds of minisleep, you don’t hear the numbers.
Many adults obtain less than optimal sleep, and some have a sizable sleep debt. Like gamblers playing with borrowed money, many sleep-deprived persons live in the red of lost sleep, often compromising their responsibilities at their jobs, sometimes using drugs for temporary energy. Most employees, even in crucial jobs, are forced to keep going all day no matter how fatigued they are. What if such sleep-deprived persons are dealing with the safety of an airplane? What if they are driving a semi-trailer down a crowded highway? What if they are making a military decision pivotal to war or peace?

Then, if we continue to stay awake, we usually get a second wind at about 8, 9, or 10 in the morning and function relatively well again during that day.
Missing sleep on a chronic basis may be a different story. After several nights without sleep, performance does go down, and you have more trouble concentrating and remembering numbers.

Even though many insomniac patients feel lethargic and slowed down, their bodies act as if they are “hyped up.” When the metabolism of normal sleepers is increased to the same level by their drinking about four cups of normal coffee, the normal sleepers too experience insomnia. The message-most patients with insomnia are hyper aroused anyway, and adding coffee makes this condition worse. (Paradoxically, hyperactive children are often helped by caffeine.)
Caffeine and similar stimulants can cause many more problems than most people realize, and too much caffeine may be a factor in your insomnia. Often, insomniacs are so exceptionally sensitive to this stimulant that they may be unable to sleep after one cup of tea or a chocolate bar in the afternoon.
One study showed that patients who had caffeine-induced wakefulness cleared caffeine more slowly from their bodies. The concentration of caffeine in their blood was higher at midnight- eight hours after afternoon coffee-than it was in other people. Also, sensitivity to caffeine can increase with age. Even if you have had coffee, tea, or cola drinks in late afternoon or in the evening in the past with no trouble, they can start contributing to poor sleep as you get older.
Consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine a day (two cups of coffee, two or three colas, or several caffeine-containing pain tablets) is likely to affect sleep and create the danger of caffeine addiction. In some people, it takes much less–one cup of coffee at lunch or one cola in the afternoon.
So surefire insomnia solutions include reducing caffeine intake.
