Sleep Apnea In Children Can Produce Considerably Lower IQ Scores

October 22nd, 2008 snoring exercises Posted in Snoring Exercises, how to stop snooring, how to stop snoring, how to stop snorring Comments Off

Despite the fact that we have known for a long time that children with sleep apnea often get poor scores on IQ tests (usually having an average of 85 against a score of 101 for children who are not suffering from sleep apnea) one thing that we have not known until quite recently is that this results from chemical changes in the brain. This means that an otherwise smart kid could well produce a run of the mill performance because of nothing more than a sleeping problem which, in the majority of cases, can be fairly easily treated.

In a recent study undertaken in Baltimore, 31 children aged between 6 and 16 (19 of whom had been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea) were examined with a special type or magnetic resonance imager and it was found that those children with sleep apnea displayed considerable changes in the right frontal cortex and hippocampus which are sections of the brain that are linked to learning and higher mental function.

The study also discovered that these kids were suffering from levels of three chemicals within the brain which indicated brain damage. This alteration of the chemistry of the brain resulting from sleep apnea might or might not be permanent and, at this stage, further studies are needed to see if this effect can be reversed.

Even if reversal is possible however and the chemistry of the brain and cognitive function can be returned to normal, kids with sleep apnea will suffer learning problems as long as they are suffering from untreated sleep apnea and will certainly not be able to rewind time and regain this learning period.

Parents should of course already be looking out for the signs of sleep apnea in their children but this study clearly shows that an early diagnosis and treatment of this sleep problem could have a significant affect on a child’s success in life.

There are many signs of sleep apnea including numerous pauses in breathing during sleep which frequently result in an arousal from sleep and tossing and turning in bed. Kids can also display labored or loud breathing, snoring, coughing, gasping and, at times, bedwetting at a time when should usually have passed.

Parents might also notice a child sleeping in an unusual position, possible with their bottom sticking up in the air and with their head tilted back in an effort to force their airway open.

In very many cases child sleep apnea can be effectively treated by removing the adenoids or tonsils, or excess tissue from the nose or the back of the throat. Additionally, a continuous positive airways pressure machine (or pediatric CPAP) can also be employed to give the child an airflow delivered using a mask which is worn during sleep to keep the airway open.

In itself sleep apnea is incapacitating for any child and the effect of night after night of poor quality sleep will take their toll on your child. However, when this is combined with an impairment of your child’s IQ, it is imperative that you act at the earliest possible opportunity to have this condition professionally diagnosed and treated.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms Are Not Always Easy To Spot

October 22nd, 2008 snoring exercises Posted in Snoring Exercises, how to stop snooring, how to stop snoring, how to stop snorring Comments Off

Sleep apnea symptoms are most often observed in men who are over forty and also overweight but they can appear at any age in both women and men and are being seen increasingly in children.

The most obvious symptom of sleep apnea (which is merely one of a number of common sleep disorders) is snoring which is hard to spot by yourself and generally needs to be pointed out to you by a sleeping partner. There are however many reasons for snoring and the mere fact that you snore does not by itself mean that you are suffering from sleep apnea. It is a fact however that the majority of sleep apnea sufferers do snore.

The next most obvious symptom of sleep apnea is undue tiredness during the day. Sleep apnea sufferers stop breathing frequently during sleep and the body’s natural reaction is to awaken you enough for you to start breathing again, but not enough for you to be conscious of the fact that you are being awakened. This of course means that your sleep is continually interrupted and very light so that you are not getting the deep sleep which your body needs. As a consequence you become more and more tired during the day.

Left untreated the effects of sleep apnea begin to emerge and you will start to experience additional symptoms that could include headaches (especially first thing in the morning), tetchiness and depression. You might also notice that you are starting to put on weight.

A further not quite so obvious symptom of sleep apnea is an increase in blood pressure which can give rise to a number of cardiovascular difficulties. should you be one of the increasing number of people who are now monitoring their blood pressure regularly at home then you will pick this up quite easily but, otherwise, it will not be found until you attend the doctor to have a routine physical examination.

One further symptom is that of increasing problems with memory retention and learning difficulties. Once again this is not something which is easy for you to see yourself but others around you may well notice that you are not as fast on the uptake as you used to be.

Finally, a number of sleep apnea sufferers will notice a decline in sexual function that can lead to impotency.

Each of these symptoms in isolation could be indicative of almost any problem you care to mention. If you start to see these symptoms appearing together however then there is a better than even chance that you have sleep apnea and you need to consult your doctor and think about having a sleep apnea test.

Have you ever questioned yourself or other people on why do people snore?

When we are asleep, the air passes through our nose, throat and lungs naturally, noiselessly and unimpeded. Though, for millions of people, a disruption in the flow of air naturally occurs. Several reasons for this are a clogged nose, or maybe, the bottom of the tongue is hampering the breathing.

A healthy lifestyle to prevent snoring is to:

•    Avoid large meals before sleeping, have at least three hours rest after taking your last meal.
•     Maintain a healthy balanced diet to keep your weight in accordance with your age, height and body type.
•    Conduct a regular physical exercise to burn excess fats.
•    If you are prone to allergies, lessen bedroom allergens to avoid nasal mustiness.
•    Avoid sleeping with open windows.
•    Sleep on your side.
•    Avoid overtiredness and set up a normal sleeping pattern.

Stop snoring! Snoring home remedies will give you a silent night

August 4th, 2008 snoring exercises Posted in breathe right, cure for snoring, do you snore, help stop snoring, how to stop snooring, how to stop snoring, how to stop snorring, snoring problems, snoring relief, snoring remedies, snoring tips, stop snoring home remedies, stop snoring home remedy, stop snoring remedy Comments Off

Snoring home remedies will give you a silent night

When sleeping, the muscles and tissues in the throat tend to relax which results to the breathing airways becoming smaller than normal. The shrinkage of the air passage in the throat increases the speed of the air when breathing. When the space is constricted, the increased velocity triggers a vibration in the throat such as of the soft palate and the uvula. This is the way the noise is created when snoring.

There could be numerous roots of snoring. As concluded in sleep studies, too much drinking of alcohol, excessive fats especially in the area of the throat and taking sedatives worsen snoring. Although not all people snore when they sleep, everyone must have experienced this in one way or another. Some people snore only when they have colds or when sleeping in their backs.

To treat the snoring trouble, surgical procedures could be done. These involved the trimming of respiration obstructions such as impaired uvula, part of the enlarged tonsils and adenoids. The use of radio frequency apparatus is used to correct the deviated tissues. However, surgical processes have shown little success in terminating the snoring noise.

To avoid snoring, weight lost is recommended to those who have gained excess body fats. According to studies, a 20% excess to the normal weight can cause snoring. The next thing to avoid before sleeping is taking alcohol. It is because alcohol can relax the muscles of the body including the throat more than the customary. Sedatives can greatly contribute to snoring. Besides, becoming accustomed to sedatives is bad not only to snoring but for the health in general. Smoking can also cause the mucous membranes to bulge that it narrows the passage of the air. This increases the velocity of the air inhaled that triggers the vibration of the muscles in the throat.

The position in sleeping can help reduce snoring. Sleeping on your side is advisable so that you can breathe easily. As much good can be the effect of not using pillows when sleeping. Pillows tense the neck so they can worsen the snoring intensity.

For cases of snoring where the patient may need immediate attention but is not amendable to surgical operations, snoring devices are applicable. These oral devices are placed inside the mouth to keep the airways open and thus, make breathing easier.  The appliances are prescribed by dentists in place of surgery and can treat even the acute snorers. These are safe appliances and can by far be used even at your own homes! They have easy to follows procedures and can be removed the next morning when you wake up. They’re no hassle. You can sleep as soundly as if you are wearing no apparatus at all.

Oral snoring appliances help a lot of snorers with the efficiency of 85%-90%. With the combination of the other tips stated above, snoring can be resolved and totally wiped out. And by conditioning the muscles, who knows, you may not need the oral snoring appliance anymore the next time you lie in your bed.

Snoring is a dilemma that causes more trouble in the relationships of sleepers. Why? If your mate can’t take the nuisance of your snoring, the friction of that night can last up to the following mornings!

Remedy to Snoring Within the Four Corners of Your Home

August 4th, 2008 snoring exercises Posted in help stop snoring, how to stop snooring, how to stop snoring, snoring and sleep apnea, snoring apnea, snoring cures, snoring device, snoring doctor, stop snoing, stop snorin, stop snorinf, stop snoring home remedies, stop snoring now, stop snoring remedy, stop snoring surgery Comments Off

Snoring is known to be a condition where you breathe through your open mouth and your nose when you sleep and afterwards producing a disturbing noise from the vibration of your soft palate.

Since snoring occurs whenever you are asleep and sleep is commonly done within the comfort of your home, then expect that there are ways to fight against snoring even if you are home.

Snoring is not a deadly disease wherein you have to take expensive medications, regular check-up with a physician or perhaps countless hospital visits. Within the four corners of your home, you can do something with a family member who snores.

Trouble-free remedy for snoring is to establish a good sleeping habit. Studies show that sleeping on your back increases the chances for you to heavily snore. Hence it is suggested that you sleep on your side. By doing so, you allow your soft palate and your tongue to descend thus causing constriction to your air passage. If you are uncomfortable sleeping on your side, you can also try sleeping on your stomach. Let someone observe your sleeping patterns and let him monitor which side you sleep well and snore less.

Another sleeping habit you must bear in mind is the height of your pillow. Sleeping without a pillow or on a flat bed worsens snoring, for this reason; experts recommend that people who snore should sleep on a thick pillow. Additionally, it is also good if the head of your bed is lifted up. Make sure though that you lift the head of your bed within four to six inches only. Improper use of pillow and head bed elevation aggravates snoring.

If the above-mentioned measures where undertaken and still you have not successfully resolved your snoring dilemma whenever you are home, then try other options which you can practice at home such as the following:

?    Breathing steam. Mucus clogs the air passage but once you breathe in steam your mucus will loosen up and unblock your air passageway.

?    Let honey be available in your home. A number of studies have shown that honey relieves snoring by making the air passageway clear. What you can do is mix honey on your favorite tea. You can also dip your favorite fruit on the honey.

?    Nasal strips – with the use of this product you are relieving nasal congestion. Take note that you can easily breathe if your nostrils are kept wide open.

?    Throat sprays – this kind of snoring remedy will aid you since the spray material covers the soft tissues of your throat. By doing so, the air you breathe can easily move around your air passageway and reduce the bothersome noise snoring produces.

?    Anti-snoring pills – due to its plant enzyme and herb ingredients anti-snoring pills are believed to hinder the throat and nose tissue from engorgement which makes way for an unblocked and efficient air passageway.

Nasal strips, throat sprays and anti-snoring pills can be most helpful to alleviate your snoring problems. However, it is best to consult your physician before you even purchase it and store it inside your medicine box.

It is not always a must to run to a doctor or rush into a hospital when you have available cure inside your home. You can at least try and make the sufferer endure temporary relief.

Snoring can be harmful to ones health in the long run, which is why many individuals are looking for the best snoring remedy that is available.

Snoring can affect the whole family, because the annoying sound reverberates all throughout the household especially during the night when all things are pretty quiet. Depriving your family with their night’s sleep is not a very good thing to do; and the least you can do is to stop snoring, but how?

If you’ve been snoring for a long period of time, perhaps it is time to seek professional attention. What most people don’t know is that snoring is a major symptom of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition which needs considerable professional attention. Many people die from this condition because breathing stops suddenly while a person is asleep. Persons with sleep apnea should seek medical advice immediately; you can observe that the person struggles momentarily, catching their breath after snoring stops for a few seconds.

Some snoring remedies include:

1.    nose strips
2.    special pillows
3.    dental appliances
4.    acupuncture

Home Remedy, An Alternative Treatment for Snoring

Alternative Home Treatment for Snoring

Lying on a bed, thinking of the day’s activities and finally, thanking God for all the day’s blessings; and now, it’s time to go to sleep. Your eyelid slowly closes, and you find yourself drifting to a deep sleep when you’re jolted out of your bed only to hear the sound of terrible snoring.

Now, you’re wide awake and all you can hear are the cries of insects at night and that horrible snoring. What a terrific way to spend your sleep at night.

Most couples are that way. Snoring is probably the most known cause of major marital strife. But instead of cursing your loved one, why not start encouraging him/her to get medical help. The snoring is not only harmful to the one who actually puts up with the noise every night, but also to the snorer as well.

Some people refuse to get medical help because their primary reason is the cost of the treatment. Yes, treating people who snores are quite expensive, but this doesn’t mean though that you have no other choices. In fact, there are a lot of home remedies which you can choose from.

The best, and yet the most difficult of all snoring remedies, is changing your lifestyle for much better habits in life. The first thing is to lose unwanted weight. Most people who are considered fat have fats stored in their throat and neck regions. These fats collapse your throat making your snoring even louder. Eating heavy meals at night is not advisable because it can also cause snoring. Sleeping pills and alcohol are also known to cause snoring among individuals that causes the muscles in your mouth’s back to relax. Smoking is another habit that you should get rid of. All this things are part of your unhealthy lifestyle. Perhaps now you will have an idea what your lifestyle is doing to your family life.

Another home snoring remedy is to sleep at your side or your stomach. If you have a companion, more often than not, he/she will be glad to help you to roll back just in case you shift your sleeping position. For a couple to get a good night sleep, the ‘give and take’ relationship is still needed. You will help the other in staying in his sleeping position while you will be rid of any snoring noise.

Another home remedy is to elevate the snorer’s heads while sleeping. Using too many pillows to elevate the head is not advisable because it can only worsen the snoring. Instead, you are required to use a flat pillow against an entirely elevated head-side of the bed. The elevation should be about four to six inches.

Watch out for symptoms of sleep apnea. If your bed mate exhibits frequent cessation of breathing while he sleeps, then that is a danger sign. You now have a harmful disorder, which requires medical attention.

Home remedies are good, especially if you can’t afford expensive treatments. If you can do all these home remedies effectively, perhaps you don’t need to spend a lot of money in treating that horrible snore.

You’re not alone in your sleeplessness problem. There are many people out there who are in the same situation. Try the home remedies and get rid of that horrible snore.

First, try to change your position in sleeping. Elevate the head of your bed by a few inches, or try to add some more pillows. This will lessen the jamming of the air passage in your throat muscle. Avoid sleeping on your back too; the tendency if you do this is to give more chances on the occurrence of snoring, the reason for this is the draw back of soft palate and tongue, thus, constricting the air passage.

Next, you can try to modify your lifestyle. Your present lifestyle may contribute in aggravating your snoring, for instance, excessive eating, excessive drinking of alcohol, and too much intake of cigarette.

Modifying lifestyle is what the doctors’ called “conservative therapy.” Truth is the doctors stated that this is the advisable primary step in curing snoring before attempting to use other harsh treatments.

Try to motivate yourself to conduct a regular physical exercise to lessen your weight. Avoid excessive intake of alcohol and cigarettes, the effect of not preventing both of these will add to the obstruction to the airway. Likewise, avoid excessive intake of sleeping pills and tranquilizers, these medicines also worsen snoring.

If you will also notice, some of the medicines that are being offered in the drugstore can be classified as home remedies. Examples of these are the nasal strips, nose sprays, and anti-snoring pills. The ingredients contained by these medicines are basically herbs, and plant enzymes, these can manage the swelling of nose and throat tissues. Additionally, these offset snoring by evening the airflow.

Generally, a home remedy is almost alike to the drug free medication. The procedures of such prescriptions are founded in the inventions’ experience.

There is the drug free snoring “mandibular advancement splint” for instance; the function of this is to maintain your jaw in a pressed onward position. This helps to widen the air passage, and according to the report this helps in more than 80 percent in impeding snoring cases.

If you are really determined and will exert further efforts to the suggested home remedies above, it is not impossible to cure your snoring all by yourself.

The process for these is simple. Distinguish first the problem, ponder. Then, work on it everyday. Following this will award you a good outcome. And the days of disgraceful nights will come to an end. This may possibly happen earlier than you anticipated.

So good luck on your self-medication!

Tense Jaw Equals Snoring

The noisy sound of snoring happens when there is an obstruction to the direct flow of air in the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This is the collapsible part of the airway at which the tongue and upper throat become parallel, the soft palate and the uvula (the fleshy structure you can see dangling of the roof of the mouth going back to the throat). When these tissue masses strike against one another they vibrate, causing snoring while breathing.

The most common reason for snoring is weak muscles at the back of the throat that become very relaxed while sleeping causing the associated tissue to swell. These components induce a partial airflow obstruction and narrowed airway, permitting vibration of the soft tissues in the throat.

Also excessive bulkiness tissues of the throat. Large tonsils and adenoids can trigger snoring in children. Overweight folks also carry bulky tissues in the neck.

So we are seeing a commonality here. Lack of toned muscles in the throat region is causing us to snore. What do we do about this? How do we stop snoring? Tense jaw syndrome, one of the most common blockage that causes snoring. What do we do to relief tense jaw syndrome? With one simple exercise. Put the upper and lower molars together, open your mouth pressing the molars as wide a part as you can. That should be done about 15 to 20 times in a row.

Tense jaw is just one of the problems needed to be solved to completely cure your snoring. There are many more muscles in the throat region that needs to be toned and maintained.

How To Induce Sleep - 10 Ideas

May 18th, 2008 snoring exercises Posted in cpap equipment, how to stop snooring, how to stop snoring, how to stop snorring, insomnia, narcolepsy, reduce snoring Comments Off

I use to lay awake at night wondering how I could induce sleep! Honestly; I did, it was no joke.

In fact I got to the stage where I really didn’t look forward to the end of the day as I knew that that was when the battle would begin.

So I set to and made it my mission to discover ways to help me get some decent shut-eye.

I’ve tried all of the following to varying degrees of success. The last one is the remedy I’ve stayed with as it works the best for me, but we’re all different so try them all & see what works best for you. I hope you discover 1 that does.

1. Instigate a bedtime routine- such as always going to bed at the same time (even if you don’t feel sleepy). Remember it takes 2 weeks for a behaviour pattern to become a habit so don’t give up after a few nights if nothing seems to be happening any differently.

2. Old fashioned, I know, but it can work. Always have a warm milky drink before you go to bed. This is scientifically proven to help induce sleep.

3. Pay attention to where you sleep. Is it too light for you even with curtains drawn? Consider buying curtains or blinds with a ‘blackout’ fabric as a lining. They are easily available, not too expensive and are fantastic to use if you’re a shift worker & have to sleep during the day.

4. Try not to eat anything after 8pm at night. This means that your body won’t be digesting (and therefore working) during the night when you’re trying to sleep. It’s just 1 less thing for your body to cope with.

5. Try & relax. Easier said than done, I know. Try to have some SSS ( silence, solitary, stillness) time to yourself. During anytime of the day would be helpful, but especially at night just before you want to get to sleep.

6. If necessary, decide to sleep in the spare room (if you have one) if you normally sleep with a partner. Sometimes the stress of thinking you’re keeping someone else awake because you can’t sleep acts as a vicious circle and just gets you more stressed out.

7. Try some over the counter herbal/natural remedies. If they don’t work for you at least they won’t have had any unpleasant side effects & you can stop taking them instantly. You don’t have to wean yourself off them. ( Remember to try them for at least 2 weeks though)

8. Try; if possible, to sleep when you feel tired- even if it seems unsociable. At least sleep when you can & then try some of the above ideas once you’re not so fractious.

9. Try holistic treatments such as reflexology, Acupuncture or massage. These work on the mind, body & spirit and may very well get to the root of the problem without needless medication.

10. Last but not least & my favourite. Use binaural beats to lower your brain frequencies in minutes to instil quick & healthy sleep patterns. Basically they are low delta frequencies; totally harmless, just relaxing and natural (your brain already produces them!) Your brain is directly responsible for sleep & it’s when there’s too much inner chatter and busyness going on that sleep seems unobtainable. We just don’t switch off. Listening to these frequencies has been a life-saver for me & they’ve given me my life back as I can now function again & no longer have to worry about how to induce sleep.

Snoring And Heart Disease

Recent studies have uncovered possibly worrisome links between snoring and heart disease.

In 2004, the American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine published a study performed by medical professionals from Alfred Hospital at Melbourne, Australia. The study was headed by Prof. Matthew Naughton, the person in charge of the Sleep Disorders Center of the said hospital. The study suggests that snoring could be a possibly serious cause for heart disease like diabetes or smoking.

According to the study, sleep deprivation or interrupted sleep as well as periods of temporary breathing cessations result from severe snoring. This consequently makes the heart experience stress.

Snoring can cause people to unconsciously “wake up” from their sleep. When this happens, their blood pressure often goes up and down, an indication that the heart is put to hard work as it faces increasing resistance.

Oxygen levels are also depleted when a person snores. When oxygen levels go down, heart muscles stiffen. If this happens, the heart finds it hard to pump in its normal fashion.

The study also points out how a person determines if he’s suffering from a bad case of snoring. Excessive loud snoring, experiencing breathing problems during snoring, feeling sleepy during daytime after a snoring-punctured night as well as snoring more than three times a week are just a few examples of serious cases of snoring.

A person who is experiencing any of the aforementioned cases may be suffering from sleep apnea. If his condition is left untreated, it may gradually develop into hypertension. The latter can then lead to heart disease.

While more convincing proof is needed to strengthen the link between snoring and heart disease, it wouldn’t hurt if people nonetheless exhibit extra care with their sleeping habits.

Can’t Sleep Or No Time To Sleep - Don’t Fool Yourself

Today’s lifestyle keeps us so busy that to accomplish our work schedules, home and family life needs, have time to exercise, eat healthy, keep our homes clean, socialize and spend quality time with the special people in our lives, most people are shortchanging their sleep time. According to Dr. Emily Senay on 9/20/06 on CBS news, anywhere from 10-34% of Americans have sleep trouble or insomnia. Chronic lack of sleep can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, anxiety and depression, car accidents, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, diabetes, and aging, among other things. In fact, one study shows that getting less than 5 hrs of sleep per night tripled your risk of heart attack.

More and more people are working over 40 hours per week which when added to commuter time, leaves little time left to accomplish all our other requirements. Most of us find ourselves staying up later and later to get these things done. Then we drag ourselves out of bed and try to concentrate on our tasks at hand. One of the signs that we are severely lacking in sleep is if we are able to fall asleep almost anywhere and almost instantly.

Many of us also lay in bed worrying about all the things we need to do and are unable to fall asleep. Tossing and turning seems like such a waste of time and then we are even more frustrated! What should we do? Lay in bed longer or get up and get some of those things done? Experts usually suggest getting up for a short period of time, perhaps 30 minutes, and doing something active, then returning to bed. Another suggestion that I like is to make a list of things you want to accomplish, ranking them in order of priority, so you can stop worrying about them and let your mind relax and finally sleep.

There are many more things you can do to prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep but this has to become a priority and not a last minute thing to do when you can’t stay awake any longer. Women are particularly good at sacrificing themselves and their health for their families. When you look at the results of sleep deprivation, these diseases are not worth the time you think you may have saved each day.

Get a health checkup and determine if you have any of the symptoms like weight gain, especially around your middle from higher cortisol levels which lead to eating high sugar and high carbohydrate foods. What is your cholesterol level and blood pressure? Do you have trouble remembering things or concentrating? If you have any of these problems and you know that you are not getting around 8 hrs of sleep/night, make it a habit to start caring for yourself. There are many products out there from sleeping pills, sound machines, hypnotherapy and relaxation tapes to help if you have trouble getting or staying asleep. Now is the time to prevent further health problems and to energize yourself so you can feel your best.
