The basis of snoring is vibration of the tissues that occurs in the breathing process. Some medications and alcohol can lead to enhanced relaxation during sleep. As the muscles of the palate, tongue, neck, and pharynx become relaxed and rested, the airway collapses more. This leads to a lessened airway and greater tissue vibration. Some medications encourage a deeper total quantity of sleep, but at the same time can worsen snoring.

Medications such as sleeping pills and muscle relaxants can highly worsen the noise levels at which one snores. These types of medications are design to ease tension and relax the body. So by knowing that these medications will affect a snorer in this way, it is know that our muscle tissue in the throat region is what causes snoring, and doing exercises to strengthen these muscles can extremely lessen snoring or even cure it altogether.

The same goes for alcohol. When alcohol beverages are consumed our bodies are greatly affected. There is a slower reaction times due to relaxed muscles. With more excessive drinkers that drink to the point of “passing out” this is where the body cannot take anymore and just turns off snoring can be to the point where it would be considered apnea. The muscles in the body become relaxed from the alcohol and are less responsive. Increasing snoring and possibly leading to apnea.

First of all, you are not alone. It seems like a rite of passage for every adolescent after puberty to gradually stay up later and wake up earlier, but is this truly normal? By the strictest definition, it is not, but it certainly is common. More than likely your teenager is a victim of Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS).

What is DSPS? The easiest way to explain it is to first begin with the concept of a circadian rhythm. Everyone has a circadian rhythm that tells our body when to sleep, when to wake, when certain hormones should be released, etc. There are several items that regulate this rhythm, and to an extent this varies a little from person to person. For instance, our behaviors regulate our circadian rhythm by when we eat and perform activities. Going to bed is even a behavior that tells our nervous system we are ready to sleep.

In addition, the most powerful trigger to set our circadian rhythm is bright light. Light tends to “push” our sleep clock away from it. So, if you are exposed to bright light at 8 PM, your sleep schedule will be pushed later in the night. Melatonin, one of our body’s natural hormones, does the opposite. Melatonin “pulls” sleep toward it. Taking Melatonin at 8pm would make you more likely to fall asleep at 9-10pm. These are simplistic explanations, but you get the gist.

So what does this have to do with DSPS? For reasons that are not well defined, many teenager are prone to having their sleep schedule shift forward, or having it “delayed.” In other words, they may go to bed at 10PM but they cannot fall asleep until 2AM! Regardless, the school bus arrives early the next morning, and they have to go to school…sleep deprived. Being that they are youthful and have a robust nervous system, they persevere through the day. By the time night comes, the same thing happens all over again. The biggest problem is usually morning school performance.

Overall, all teenagers usually grow out of this pattern, but what should you do in the meantime? It has been demonstrated that teenagers that grow up in a disorganized household with loose schedules are more at risk for DSPS. The following are the key steps to alleviate delayed sleep phase syndrome:

• Adhere to a strict schedule going to bed and awakening at the same time EVERY DAY
• First set the wakeup time to the desired time (ie. 7AM)
• Use bright sunlight immediately after awakening to help “push” the sleep schedule back
• Have your teenager go to bed closer to their actual falling asleep time
• Avoid any naps during the day
• Avoid any caffeinated beverages in the evening or stimulating activities
• Gradually move the bed time/sleep time back until close to the desired bedtime

If this fails after 4-6 weeks of strict adherence, then professional consultation may be needed. Usually the above method will accomplish a great deal usually achieving 90 percent or more of the desired sleep quantity at night. Once successful, however, it is necessary to keep this schedule every day. The same tendency still exists, and loosening the sleep schedule will simply put them back into the same situation.

The important key is to be disciplined and consistent. These factors help keep one’s circadian rhythm in check.

Whatever the reason for your chronic, continuous snoring, be it that you’re getting older, drunker or fatter, you’re probably getting on your bedmate’s nerves, not to mention wiping out any chance they have for a good night’s sleep. Trust me. Now, I’m not talking about the occasional ‘mild’ snoring that you do when you sleep in a certain position, or when you have a cold - we all do it. My dog snores. Babies snore. I’m talking about those loud, intolerable, ground shaking snuffelupagus snores that just won’t quit, minute after minute, night after night.

I read somewhere that sleep partners of heavy snorers awaken over twenty times per hour. Holy sleep deprivation, Batman! Do yourself and your slumber buddy a favor and take care of it.

First, you need to rule out sleep apnea. If your partner notices that while you are asleep you literally stop breathing for, like 10 seconds or more at a time, or you wake up *super tired* and you’re excessively sleepy during the day, then you could have sleep apnea. It’s a life-threatening condition and you probably don’t even know you have it. It needs to be diagnosed by a doctor or a sleep specialist. Make an appointment with an ENT, an otolaryngologist (say that 3 times fast) or sleep clinic. Do it right away.

Plain old snoring, not to be confused with sleep apnea, is characterized by loud breathing sounds, dry mouth when you wake up, no excessive sleepiness during the day and no cessation of breath while you are snoring. It happens when the tissue at the back of your throat vibrates because you either have too much tissue or you have jiggly tissue that vibrates easily. It can also happen when your tongue obstructs your respiration. If you’re single, then you might not even know you snore. However, if you don’t feel rested when you wake up, it could be the result of nighttime snoring. Maybe you should video tape or audio tape yourself in bed…sleeping. That’s always fun.

The reason you snore may not be your fault but it is still completely annoying. You may have been born with a narrow throat or developed a narrow throat around middle-age. Men generally have more narrow air passages than women, so you have that going for you if you’re a guy. Or maybe you have chronic allergies, or sinus infections. Been there. But when it comes to things that you have control over, like how much you drink or smoke (okay, maybe you don’t have control over those), or how fat and/or out of shape you are, or if you sleep on your back, then you might try controlling those things. You’ll realize general health benefits and probably see an end to your snoring condition. When my guy Todd gets just a few pounds overweight, there he goes. Snores like a freight train until he loses the weight.

If you can’t stop getting older, or stop drinking, smoking, having infections, being male, being fat or lumpy, or sleeping in the wrong position, then I suggest you consider the following:

1. Get a special snore-no-more anti-snoring pillow designed to support and position your head correctly.
2. Get a simple snoring device for inside your mouth, like the Snore Wizard.
3. Try sleeping without a pillow at all. Ummm…yeah.
4. Attach something bulky and uncomfortable to your back. It will train you to sleep on your side if you are a chronic back sleeper.
5. Elevate the head of your bed by four or so inches. It supposedly makes your tongue and jaw move forward.
6. Skip that second martini and lay off the ice cream before bed. Both alcohol and high-fat dairy/soy products can cause problems. Alcohol, because it relaxes your airways; and dairy because it creates mucus in your throat.
7. Blow your nose. Boogers are not your friend. If you’re really stuffed up then try some nasal strips, but avoid antihistamines because they relax your throat muscles.
8. Consult your doctor to see if you are a candidate for surgery or a CPAP device (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). A CPAP forces air into your mouth through a mask and makes you breath.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that occurs when people stop breathing while they sleep.

If you find yourself waking up with sore jaw muscles or a headache, you may be suffering from bruxism — the grinding and clenching of teeth. Bruxism can cause teeth to become painful or loose, and sometimes parts of the teeth are literally ground away. Eventually, bruxism can destroy the surrounding bone and gum tissue. It can also lead to problems involving the jaw joint, such as temporomandibular joint syndrome.

Bruxism is when you clench or grind your teeth. Clenching means you tightly hold your top and bottom teeth together, especially the back teeth. Clenching puts pressure on the muscles, tissues, and other structures around your jaw. This can lead to jaw pain and soreness, headaches, earaches, damaged teeth, and other problems. The symptoms can cause temporomandibular joint problems

Bruxism involves any type of forceful contact between the teeth, whether silent and clenching, or loud and grating. Estimates vary regarding the number of people who suffer from this condition and range from 50-95% of the adult population. Approximately 15% of all children also acquire this condition. Many people are not aware that they have this condition because they grind their teeth at night while asleep, although bruxism can occur during daytime hours as well. Causes of bruxism are unknown, one study links it with such factors as anxiety, stress, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, caffeine, sleep apnea, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. Importantly, psychiatric or psychological factors do not play a role in most cases. Use of certain medications, including amphetamines, are also associated with episodes of bruxism. Sleep apnea may also be related to sleep bruxism, and evidence suggests that treating sleep apnea can help alleviate sleep bruxism.

Symptoms & Diagnosis Characteristics of sleep bruxism include clenching or grinding of canines or incisors laterally or grinding of the molars. The friction is also occasionally accompanied with a loud grinding sound. Tooth damage and loss, as well as occlusal disease, can occur over time if the condition is severe. In addition daytime headaches, jaw pain, and atypical facial pain can also be an effect.

Massage the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and face. Search carefully for small, painful nodules called trigger points that can refer pain throughout the head and face. We all need sleep. No matter your age you need to sleep, some more than others. When we sleep our bodies regenerate cells. Most of the human body healing process occurs when we are asleep getting rest. When we are asleep we also regenerate muscle tissue.

Valerian is an extract of the Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) and is widely prescribed in Europe for the treatment of insomnia. Valerian is available as a supplement in the US. In an early study, 166 volunteers were given Valerian, a Valerian containing commercial product, or placebo. After three doses, Valerian was associated with a significant decrease in the time it takes to fall asleep and improvement in sleep quality. Sleep was better in the pure Valerian extract than in the proprietary product Hova®, which contains Valerian extract. This study did not measure, however, how well the blinding worked, which is important because Valerian has a strong and distinctive smell.

An uncontrolled study of 54 subjects showed a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, and subjective distress to a stressful task after receiving Valerian. This study suggests that valerian may have sedative properties. Another study of 16 patients with sleep disorders randomly assigned patients to two doses of Valerian or a placebo nightly and measured EEG measures of sleep as well as subjective reporting of sleep quality while patients were sleeping in a sleep laboratory. Side effects include vivid dreams in as many as 16% of cases, and less commonly drowsiness, depression, dizziness, headaches or blurred vision. When the patients were given a single dose of Valerian, the lower does had no effects on subjective or EEG measures of sleep. Because of inconsistent results and no clear mechanism by which Valerian could treat insomnia without significant side effects I think that large, properly controlled trials are needed to determine if Valerian is useful for insomnia. However in the mean time since Valerian does not have major side effects I wouldn’t necessarily discourage you from using it.

Kava (or Kava-kava) is an extract of the roots of the Polynesian plant Piper methysticum used in the South Pacific for its sedative, aphrodisiac, and stimulatory effects. Active compounds include the kava pyrones, which may have effects on the brain. Several controlled trials have shown that Kava reduces anxiety in patients with anxiety disorders. One study looked at 24 subjects with stress induced insomnia treated for six weeks with 120 mg of kava daily followed by two weeks off treatment and then Valerian for another six weeks. Both Kava and Valerian improved sleep (decreased onset, longer sleep time) and reduced stress severity. Side effects of Kava include dizziness (12%), dry mouth, gastric disturbance, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, depression, and more rarely liver failure, which has caused it to be banned in some countries. Because of the very real risk of liver failure and possibly death I would not recommend Kava for the treatment of insomnia.

Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body and is involved in the regulation of the wake-sleep cycle. Melatonin can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep but overall has no effect on sleep time. It is popular with travelers. By taking melatonin, however, keep in mind that you are meddling with your own body’s hormonal status, which can have risks. For instance, taking melatonin may affect growth or reproductive function. Other side effects include abdominal cramps, confusion, depression, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. I don’t see any major risks for melatonin so if you want to try it on your next plane trip across the Atlantic feel free.

Snoring is a surprisingly common problem. Everyone snores at some time to a lesser or greater degree and even animals can snore in their sleep. In some cases it is nothing to worry about and may simply be a result of overindulging in alcohol or incorrect sleeping posture. The cause of snoring is reasonably well known. The airway is narrowed and the snoring sound is produced(mostly due to vibration of loose tissue in the rear of the throat). This article doesn’t spend much time on that, but rather addresses ‘the causes of the cause’ as suggesting widening your airways as a solution to snoring does not really help anyone. Understanding what causes the airway to narrow in the first place is much more useful in looking for solutions to your snoring problem and consequently improving your health, your sleep and in all likelihood your relationship.

There are a number of causes which are beyond our control. These include:

  • Genetics - Snoring can be genetic, namingly you can inherit a narrower than normal throat which will increase the likelihood of snoring.
  • Age - Age will often decrease the muscle tone in your neck and consequently narrow your throat. Generally being middle aged or older is likely to increase your chances of a snoring problem.
  • Gender - Sorry - but if you are a man you are more likely to snore. Men naturally have narrower air passages.
  • Allergies - Including colds, sinus infections and asthmatics. All of these cause breathing problems which will block the nasal airway and make breathing more difficult. The resulting vacuum in your throat leads to noisy breathing.

There is very little that can be done about any of these situations, although generally staying in good shape and health will lead to a better muscletone around the neck and throat and minimize the effects of a smaller air passage.

There are a number of other identified causes that do fall within out area of control:

  • Control your weight and shape - Any excess weight and any fatty tissue around the neck will lead to a narrower air way. Poor muscle tone is more likely to mean relaxed muscles, and overly relaxed throat muscles are likely to result on snoring.
  • Smoking - Being a smoker, or living with smokers and inhaling a large amount of second hand smoke both relaxes muscles and creates congestion in the lungs and nasal passage.
  • Alcohol and Drugs - Excessive drinking and use of some drugs can result in relaxation of the throat and tongue muscles, making snoring more common.
  • Watch Your Sleeping Posture - Sleeping on your back is more likely to relax the throat, block the airways and result in snoring.

These factors are important to understand, because by seeing what causes the problem, the solution will tend to present itself.
