Most of us tend to put our snoring problems aside thinking that they don’t merit any real concern but we can be no more farther than the truth. Snoring is a real problem, both socially and physically. And its complications can be life threatening, to say the least!

* Heredity. Some people are born with physical deformities that make them prone to snoring. Examples of these are a cleft palate, a long soft palate and/or uvula, and enlarged adenoids.

* Age. Middle aged people are more prone to develop snoring problems as compared to those who are younger. This happens because people tend to lose muscle tone and elasticity as they get older.

* Sex. There are more male snorers than women. They generally have narrower air passages than women.

However, there are also some factors that we can control. These include the following:

* Weight. People with excess weight are more prone to snore than their thinner counterparts. If you snore because you’ve gained excess weight, you can always change your diet and have a regular exercise routine to get you back in shape and take care of your snoring problems for good!

* Alcohol and medications. Drinking alcohol and some medications may cause your muscles to over-relax and cause snoring. So, to eliminate or minimize snoring, don’t drink alcohol and medications such as tranquilizers and antihistamines before bedtime.

* Obstructions in the nasal passages. A stuffed nose, an inflamed sinus, and allergies can obstruct the flow of air through your nasal passages and may increase the possibility that you’ll snore during your sleep. But don’t worry, there are a lot of over-the-counter medications that can take care of these!

* Sleeping position. Sleeping on your back increases the possibility of snoring. Sleep on your side instead.

When you snore, the flow of oxygen to the various parts of your body is affected. This becomes especially life threatening when your snoring develops into what is known as obstructive sleep apnea (heavy snoring followed by periods of not breathing) or OSA. In this condition, the oxygen supply to your brain is heavily compromised that you wake up several times during the night to catch your breath.

OSA is a potential killer. Frequent oxygen deprivation can lead to serious health complications such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. And this isn’t something you should take lightly. So, for your sake, start taking steps to stop snoring. You deserve it.
